How to extend your stay in Canada

Are you currently in Canada, have a job offer, and don’t know how to extend your stay or apply for permanent residence?

Know your options:

LABOR MARKET ASSESSMENT (LMIA)

The LMIA is an employer-driven process that allows you to obtain permission to apply for a new work permit in Canada or extend your current one.

An LMIA application will confirm that the company and the job offer are genuine and that it is necessary to hire a foreign worker to fill the position, as no Canadian worker or permanent resident is as qualified as you to fill such a role.

After the employer has received a positive decision from the LMIA, the employee can apply for a new work permit, valid for up to three years.

A positive LMIA will also provide up to 200 points towards your immigration application via Express Entry.

GLOBAL TALENT FLOW

The Global Talent Stream is a type of LMIA (Labor Market Impact Assessment) and part of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. Its goal is to enable businesses in Canada to attract and hire the most specialized and qualified global talent they need when Canadians or permanent residents are not available. It focuses on workers in specialized positions and in the technology industry.

The applicant (i.e. you) needs a valid job offer for a highly skilled position in one of the occupations listed as part of the global talent stream, such as computer and information systems manager, programmers, analysts, IT consultants, technicians, data scientists, software engineers, web designers, among others.

Through this category, remember that it also requires a minimum income (salary), depending on your position and the chosen province.

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)

Canada has 10 provinces and 3 territories, with each province having its own economic and geographic needs. Provincial nominee programs are aimed at those who have the skills, education, and work experience to meet specific needs and contribute to the economy of a particular province or territory.

Each province has its own programs or “flows” that target specific groups of people, with their own rules, depending on their own needs.

When you apply to immigrate through a provincially nominated program, you must show your intention to live and work in that province.

Once you are approved by a provincial government, you will receive a nomination certificate. This nomination allows you to apply for final processing by the federal government of Canada.
